It is our goal to please our guests and simultaneously push on our
environmental activities without any noticeably affecting our level of
comfort.
Active environmental management is seen by Iberotel as an important
sign of quality, as environmental protection can also contribute to the
kind of improvements in offers, products and services.
In the hotels our guests are
informed in various ways of our environmental protection policy.
Training sessions and access to broad sources of information mean that
our members of staff are constantly motivated to respect environmental
issues. For example, our links with suppliers and delivery services are
orientated around environmental aspects.
The cooperation with various environmental protection organisations is
for Iberotel every bit as important as support for local projects.

TUI Environmental Champion
The TUI Environmental Champion award was launched in 1996 as a way of honouring
hotels that stand out for their environmental and future-oriented hotel
management.
In 2004 the method for choosing the TUI Environmental Champion was fundamentally
revised. Where previously the question “How do you rate the actions and
measures of the hotel to protect the environment?” in the guest satisfaction
survey questionnaire had been the sole criterion, TUI now combines appraisal by
the guests with an analysis of the actual measures the hotel implements to
reduce the hotel’s environmental impacts.
Both criteria are ranked in a scoring model (a points system that in addition
to taking account of the rating by the guests also considers important factors
such as environmental certification to ISO 14001/EMAS, energy, water and waste
management etc.). Accordingly, a maximum 1000 points can be “earned” from both
criteria (750 points for the environmental measures and 250 points from guest
satisfaction). One hundred hotels from around the world with the highest scores
are singled out for the TUI Environmental Champion award. These hotels can use
this prestigious title for one year and are highlighted in the TUI brochures as
TUI Environmental Champions.
To make sure that
only hotels that really are environmentally managed are awarded this title,
there is a minimum standard for environmental measures that must be met before
the hotel is eligible to be called TUI Environmental Champion. The measures hotels
implement are surveyed using a specially drafted hotel checklist for TUI and contracted
hotels. The analysis of the measures and the guest survey are carried out once
a year for selecting the TUI Environmental Champions. The objectivity of the
selection and the scoring system have been reviewed and confirmed in the course
of the ISO 14001 certification process carried out by independent experts.

1. Iberotel Sarigerme Park
41. Iberotel Lamaya Resort

Egypt and the Red Sea
The Red Sea with its spectacular coral reefs has been included by the
WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in the list of the ‘Global 200’ regions and
declared a habitat key to the preservation of biological diversity on
Earth. In order to protect the coral reefs the marine national park
‘Ras Mohammed’ was set up in the vicinity of Sharm El Sheikh. TUI
hotels support the protection of the coral reefs. The Iberotel Arabella
is a founding member of the environmental organisation HEPCA (Hurghada
Environmental Protection and Conservation Association), in which
hotels and diving-schools work together to protect the coral.
In 1994,
in Egypt, new environmental legislation came into force, which was
celebrated as an eco-political breakthrough. A Ministry of the
Environment was established for the first time. There still exists,
however, in many sectors an urgent need for
improvement.
TUI Environmental Management System
In order to efficiently reach their goals in environmental protection,
TUI has also built up an environmental management system. Aside from
keeping to existing environmental laws, this system should also make
sure that constant improvements are made in the field of environmental
protection. Every year new environmental goals for hotels are set and their
implementation is analysed.
Environmental criteria:
- Regulated sewage disposal by local or private sewage works
- A minimum of three water conservation measures
- A minimum of three measures for the avoidance of unnecessary waste
- Waste separation to recycling
- A minimum of three energy-saving measures
- Regular consumption assessment
- Eco-friendly shopping
- Bio-degradable cleaning products
- Information on the environment for guests, appointment of
an environmental representative
- Assessment of the environmental
measures in the customer survey with ‘good’ or higher
